What is the Kids Company about?
Kids Company was established in 1996 to provide emotional, practical and educational support to profoundly vulnerable children and young people in London.
The organisation is based upon psychotherapeutic principles and seeks to provide an environment where relationships of empathy and attachment can be fostered between young people and trusted adults.
Kids Company service delivery points are thirty-two inner city
schools and a drop-in centre at street-level (Arches II), as well
as a post-sixteen educational programme (The Urban Academy).
The drop-in centre provides:
* meals, housing advice, social work, arts and
leisure activities, medical and employment advice, counselling and
other types of support.
The Urban Academy provides education for around 250 teenagers:
* specialist 'tailor-made' education, taking into account psychological and educational difficulties. Courses include film and media production, fashion, cookery, drama, art and music and english and maths.
The services offered by Kids Company are holistic and multi-disciplinary.
Some 11,000 children receive services from the Kids Company every year, and the organisation has an average of 1400 volunteers annually.
